On Wednesdays I post my “Top 5” which comes from a Goodreads group that creates topics for bloggers to write about. This week the topic is “Mother Figures”. The moderator clarified saying, “In honor of Mother’s Day (in the US!), discuss your favorite mother figures. TRY to refrain from using HP characters. We all know those :)”.
I struggled a lot with this one because I discovered that I really don’t read very many books with decent mother figures in them. I feel like they exist more in fantasy novels but I don’t read much of those, so this was hard. I’m sorry, but I just couldn’t come up with five. I have 2… I’m sorry.
Also, to my own mother- If you happen to be reading this, I just wanted to let you know that you’re an honorable mother figure and if a fictional character was based off of you, I’d totally mention the character in this post. Love you ❤
Honestly, this was the first and only one to actually pop into my head when reading the topic. Percy’s mom doesn’t play a huge role throughout the whole series but if you’ve read the books, you know what kind of mom she is. She’s selfless and kind and makes literally every single food item blue just to spite Smelly Gabe. I couldn’t not include her, ya know??
I could not recall or find the name of the mother in this book, so we’ll just go with Halley’s Mom. This mother/daughter dynamic reminded me so much of the relationship I had in high school with my mother. The two don’t necessarily get a long sometimes, and that’s largely due to Halley going through a bunch of teenage stuff, but the mom is a good one nonetheless. She’s a bit overprotective sometimes, but she’s just concerned for Halley. Also, I was so glad to see the way she handled Scarlett’s pregnancy. I can imagine that some parents would try to separate their daughter from their teen friend who gets pregnant (because pregnancy is totally contagious, right?) and I was really nervous that it would happen in this story. Instead, Halley’s Mom not only encourages Halley to be a stable part of Scarlett and the baby’s life, but she also helps smooth things over with Scarlett and her mother. I felt like even though Halley was on edge with her mom a lot of the time, she’d look back at those moments one day and realize that it really wasn’t nearly as overbearing as she thought it was (speaking from experience).
So, this is a pretty bad Top 5 post considering I literally only included the Top 2 but like I said, I don’t read a lot of stories with admirable mother figures. I could’ve opted out of the topic altogether but I made a big deal last week about how I was going to be doing these again after not participating in April and so I felt like I had to at least try.
What honorary mother figures in novels can you think of? Talk to me (:
