My Favorite Bookish Quotes Collection

Books are magnificent. They can make you feel seen, represented, and heard. They can produce words and feelings from you that you weren’t aware existed inside of yourself. They can help you get through awful times or boring afternoons. They can bring you joy. Truly, books are incredibly important, and I’m so happy to share my love for them with so many of you all who feel the same way towards them.

As wonderful as they are, sometimes there can be one little sentence or phrase than can exceed that wonderfulness and stick out to you. It might be something that you could really relate to, or maybe it formed the words for something you’d been trying to voice yourself but had failed to do. Maybe it’s just a really pretty, beautifully structured sentence and you can’t help but appreciate it.

Some of my favorite books didn’t produce my favorite quotes, but a few others did. Sometimes an otherwise lukewarm read gives me a quote that I’ll treasure forever. Sometimes one book is filled to the brim with them. Sometimes, a book has none at all (for me).

As an avid reader, I’ve got a decent collection of favorite quotes. Today, I’m going to share them with you. I’d love to know some of your favorites, so please do tell in the comments!

“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn’t be. And what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see?”

“I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.”

“Where should I go?” -Alice. “That depends on where you want to end up.” – The Cheshire Cat.”

“Things were rough all over, but it was better that way. That way you could tell the other guy was human too.”

“I lie to myself all the time. But I never believe me.”

The Outsiders – S.E. Hinton

“The dead aren’t the only ones who vanish: you, too, can disappear in plain sight if enough is taken from you. I was still missing, in many ways. And I wasn’t sure I wanted to be found.”

Once and for All – Sarah Dessen

“Life needed a fast forward button. Because there were days you just don’t want to live through, not again, but they kept coming around and you were powerless to stop time or speed it up or do anything to keep from having to face it.”

Sweethearts – Sara Zarr

“How dreary to be somebody.”

People Like Us – Dana Mele

“It’s so easy to get caught up in what people expect of you. Sometimes, you can just lose yourself.”

Dreamland – Sarah Dessen

“It won’t be forever. You’ll be in the dark for as long as it takes and then you’ll come out.”

Finding Audrey – Sophie Kinsella

“So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be.”

“Things change. And friends leave. Life doesn’t stop for anybody.”

“I would die for you. But I won’t live for you.”

“It’s strange because sometimes, I read a book, and I think I am the people in the book.”

“This moment will just be another story someday.”

“He’s a wallflower. You see things. You keep quiet about them. And you understand.”

“And all the books you’ve read have been read by other people. And all the songs you’ve loved have been heard by other people. And that girl that’s pretty to you is pretty to other people. and that if you looked at these facts when you were happy, you would feel great because you are describing ‘unity.”

“Please believe that things are good with me, and even when they’re not, they will be soon enough. And I will always believe the same about you.”

The Perks of Being a Wallflower – Steven Chbosky

“What you must understand about me is that I’m a deeply unhappy person.”

“It always shocked me when I realized that I wasn’t the only person in the world who thought and felt such strange and awful things.”

“I may die young, but at least I’ll die smart.”

“He was gone, and I did not have time to tell him what I had just now realized: that I forgave him, and that she forgave us, and that we had to forgive to survive in the labyrinth. There were so many of us who would have to live with things done and things left undone that day. Things that did not go right, things that seemed okay at the time because we could not see the future. If only we could see the endless string of consequences that result from our smallest actions. But we can’t know better until knowing better is useless.”

Looking for Alaska – John Green

“I was okay just a moment ago. I will learn how to be okay again.”

We Are Okay – Nina LaCour

“Maybe I still haven’t become me. I don’t know how you tell for sure when you finally have.”

“…and there I was sending all the wrong signals to the right people in the wrong ways. Again, again, again.”

The Miseducation of Cameron Post – Emily M. Danforth

“Weren’t you wearing a purity ring when we got here? Aren’t you supposed to be saving yourself?” Shanti asked. “Yeah,” Mary Lou answered. “And then I thought, for what? You save leftovers. My sex is not a leftover, and it is not a Christmas present.”

“I’m a wild girl from a cursed line of women. I paw at the ground and run under the moon. I like the feel of my own body. I’m not a slut or a nympho or someone who’s just asking for it. And if I talk too loud it’s just that I’m trying to be heard.”

Beauty Queens – Libba Bray

I realized while compiling this list that it’s actually much more extensive than I had thought. That being said, I think that I may do a Part 2 later on, because I don’t want to bombard you with too many quotes! Some of these are very well known and you’ve likely heard of them already, but maybe there are a few that you haven’t! I hope that if any of these lines called out to you, you’ll check out the book that they came from!

Do we have any favorites in common? (:

  1. I started tearing up when I read the quotes from Cameron Post, not that that’s anything new lol. The quotes from The Outsiders made me immediately want to reread the book, so there is a really good chance I’ll do that soon. I absolutely love this post idea! I have so so many favorite quotes I honestly can’t keep track of them lol.

    1. It was a really fun post to make but I had to go to my Goodreads and search through quotes because I didn’t have my books in front of me and it’s truly hard to keep up with all of the amazing ones! I love reading your quotes on your reviews; I’d love to see you do one dedicated entirely to quotes!
