On Wednesdays I post my “Top 5” which comes from a GoodReads group that creates topics for bloggers to write about. The month of February uses topics that are in some way related to romance, love, and Valentines Day. The topic this week is “Love Interests You Would’ve Broken Up With”. I’m already skeptical of a lot of romances going in so I tend to have a lot of opinions about this type of thing.
As soon as I saw this topic, The Spectacular Now popped into my brain. I didn’t just “not care” for Sutter, I hated him. If I were Amy, there is absolutely no chance that I would’ve let some below average, selfish, drunken idiot make me feel as sad as Sutter did her. Amy was so sweet and naive and completely blinded by love. The entire time I just wanted to reach into the pages and hug her. The book isn’t even a bad one but my hatred for Sutter definitely clouded my judgement. He would 100% get the boot from me.
Next on my list of horrible significant others is Stephen. I mentioned this book in a post the other day and I was reminded of just how bad the relationship between Stephen and Lucy truly was. Once again, we have a super toxic relationship but unlike Sutter, Stephen is quite literally a psychopath. He was extremely manipulative, he lacked empathy entirely, and showed no true emotion towards… well, anything really. I know he played the nice guy in the beginning to lure her in but I would seriously run from this guy.
I’ve said it again and again and again. This is a crappy “love” story. I get that people like it because it’s cutesy but Leo honestly sucks. Who chases after a girl because he’s infatuated with how cool and different she is but then hates how different she is once she’s his girlfriend? I can never wrap my brain around it. I know it’s supposed to be some lesson about acceptance but I still don’t like Leo and would definitely not have kept him as a boyfriend.
I… don’t have a reasonable explanation for this. I don’t like Theo. I never did. He’s one of my least favorite males from Sarah Dessen and I just think I would’ve broken up with him if he were my boyfriend. Actually, he probably would’ve never been my boyfriend in the first place, but you get the point.
Woooo, buddy. Dr. Shields is… kind of terrifying? And brilliant. Terrifyingly brilliant. I can’t go into too much detail on why I would break up with her because it gives away major spoilers (and if you haven’t read it I’d definitely recommend that you do). However, I will say that she is not the type of woman I’d ever like to cross. I’d have to break up with/divorce her if I wanted any chance at normalcy. Otherwise I’d walk on eggshells for my entire life.
Which fictional characters would you kick to the curb? Talk to me (:
