Pigeon-Blood Red

Book Details (1)Synopsis:

For underworld enforcer Richard “Rico” Sanders, it seemed like an ordinary job. Retrieve his gangster boss’s priceless pigeon-blood red ruby necklace and teach the double-dealing cheat who stole it a lesson. A job like a hundred before it. But the chase quickly goes sideways and takes Rico from the mean streets of Chicago to sunny Honolulu, where the hardened hit man finds himself in uncharted territory when a couple of innocent bystanders are accidentally embroiled in the crime.

As Rico pursues his new targets, the hunter and his prey develop an unlikely respect for one another and Rico is faced with a momentous decision: follow his orders to kill the couple whose courage and character have won his admiration, or refuse and endanger the life of the woman he loves?

My review

Rating: 4 stars

Note: Thank you to the author and his publicist for sending me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I actually read the second installment of this series before reading this one, so I had a bit of an idea of what I was going into. I discovered that I liked this story line more than the second book!

Duncan has a really unique way of writing that I think takes getting accustomed to, but it tells the story in a way that helps create the images in your brain. I once again felt like this story line belonged on some crime TV channel. It reads much like an episode of a mob story (though this isn’t a mob story) gone wrong (or right, I guess, depending on how you see it).

Now that I’ve gotten to know these characters across two books, I like them much more. Especially Rico. I know that not everyone goes for the anti-hero, but that’s kind of one of my favorite tropes in crime novels. It keeps it interesting.

The story was split into three parts and I thought it was planned very well. It’s all written in third person, and the author takes advantage of that to give us insight into several different characters and situations without making things jumpy. It all transitions pretty smoothly.

Overall, it’s an interesting series that anyone with a love for crime and dark romance to check out!
